HIGHLIGHTS

  • Easier hike, with plenty of beautiful views. I wish I had pics/vids to share. There was a ton of water (we crossed bridge after bridge after bridge over what I assumed to be the same river for most of the morning, with several waterfalls and a natural dam towards the end of the walk, near where I ended up for the night).

  • It got really sunny for the first time on the trip.

  • We received plenty of support from other pilgrims (emotional and financial (about 150 euros)). So grateful.

  • I met some really great Spaniards at my albergue who had been doing a different route of the Camino together for the past week. I shared a room with one of them, Antonio, and it was a relief to meet them when I finally arrived and feel secure in where I was staying. They were so talkative and hospitable. They invited me out for dinner, which included wine, which turned into dessert, which extended to breakfast this morning. They didn't speak much English at all, so it was helpful with my Spanish—if not exhausting in its own way after an already incredibly exhaustively exhausting day. I'm incredibly grateful for their friendliness.

  • Also super grateful for Sara and Sanna. We've gotten along really well, before and after the robbery. Hiking with them is nice, because we all seem to understand the importance of silence. Not too much talking. They both quit their jobs before coming to start the Camino, so we all are in transitional phases. So that's also cool. Plenty for all of us to think about.

  • We've eaten well while in Pamplona, for pretty reasonable if not great prices. Found a vegetarian/vegan restaurant yesterday (Sanna is vegetarian/pescatarian; Sara is lactose-intolerant) and split 2 "menus" (2 courses with dessert), and today we split a variety of pintxos (with a modernized version of one of my all-time favorite dishes, Pulpo a la Gallega (Galician octopus, slivers of octopus tentacles served over steamed potatoes, with olive oil and smoked paprika (this place's version served the octopus over more of a spiced potato puree))). You would love the culture of sharing and splitting everything. We actually talked about that this afternoon.

  • Blisters are still there, but are less bothersome. Haven't had the knee tendon tightness since the first day. Feeling good, and looking forward to continuing.

  • The police here have been super cordial and helpful. Incredibly grateful.

  • Bought some Teva's! They had some at a Camino store we went to today so Sara could get a new Credencial for the Camino, and they seemed reasonably priced (55 euros, unlike earlier when I saw them for 90 and up), so I tried them and took the plunge. Will report back, but I'm looking forward to testing them out soon.

  • Got a great night's sleep (mostly due to exhaustion and comfort of feeling safe with the people I was with), and will likely get another one tonight in the hotel (full disclosure: Sara and I will sharing one bed, but it's a big bed; also, for what it’s worth, it's really warm in the room, so I doubt I'll even be under the covers the whole night. (Having the experience in San Sebastián with Emma, and being able to talk to you about it, was really helpful, and I feel like that was very informative for this situation as well.))

    • Another thing I thought about while walking, in the wake of the recent connections with females while traveling, was that I want to make more effort to connect with my sister moving forward. Thinking about the connections has made me think it has a lot to do with being a big brother, and while channeling that same mentality\energy towards new friends is good, it made me think about how much I channel towards Jenna, and that's an area I think I can definitely work on.

  • Had a really nice shower and shaved again.

CHALLENGES

  • Got robbed.

  • Don't have a phone, and I've been realizing little by little while walking of all the things that were tethered to the phone, like:

    • clock/alarm clock

    • music/podcasts

    • all the music I've been working on using that app (including "Sad Lion" (maybe "Sad Lion" was a bit foreshadowing))

    • all the voice memos full of journal-type musings, crude musical ideas (that I would eventually transcribe into the app to further develop), etc.

    • all my photos (I checked today to see if maybe everything had uploaded to Google Photos last time I had WiFi, but I found out the last time things were uploaded was back in Madrid) and—at least for the time being—any other photos of the current marvelous views I encounter

    • access to WhatsApp (the computer version is tethered to and dependent on a phone)

    • probably more that I haven't realized yet

  • Had to double back and walk an extra few miles for a place to sleep last night. On the bright side, I chose to walk because I was still feeling pretty tense and upset about the previous night's events (as well as the hotel not letting me sleep on the floor in the room), so physical exertion was a helpful outlet.

  • Probably forgetting some smaller things, but that's fine.

SOME THINGS I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO TOMORROW

  • Getting back on the trail

  • Hopefully finding a cheap phone soon that I can use for WhatsApp, photos, clock/alarm, and probably not much else

  • More time to think while walking

  • More communication with K8, hearing more about her trip when we find the time

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Shorter hike today. Less extreme altitude change. More consistent weather. Arrived in Zubiri after ~5 hours.

  • Ana and Silvia from Barcelona looked after me and made some phone calls to albergues ahead to try and find me places to stay. Very sweet.

  • Was feeling like I could walk substantially more, and there were a few more villages within reasonable walking distance.

  • Found a reasonably priced (I think) sleeping bag and am now feeling like nothing is keeping me from finishing the Camino, even if places are all booked up.

  • Reconnected with a few friends from yesterday and made a few new friends today.

  • Felt pretty equanimous to any of the  minor pains I felt today (mostly blisters).

  • Tightness in my knee was not a problem today.

  • Had some fun with the suboptimal situation that unfolded as far as dwellings for the night. It was kind of a feeling of “this is too crazy to not be entertained by.”

  • Got to know Sanna (Finland) and Sara (Switzerland) quite a bit more (we bonded over wine and snacks), and Simon (Germany) and Giovana (Brazil) joined us.

  • Treated some blisters on my toes, and those will hopefully be better soon.

  • Tried fried egg flavored potato chips for the first (and probably last) time.

  • Less time with Lecherous Brit, although he was too hard to shake entirely.

CHALLENGES

  • Didn’t sleep too well, again. Someone grinded their teeth several times throughout the night, and it sounded something other than human.

  • Shorter walk, felt like walking more, but nowhere had any vacancy. This may become an ongoing problem.

  • Feeling a bit sore, but overall pretty good.

  • Having all of my expectations shattered by more tourists on the Camino than ever before.

SOME THINGS I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO TOMORROW

  • A(nother) supposedly easier day on the trail.

  • I’m not sure what else. Hoping to have WiFi soon so I can talk with K8 and hear her voice.

  • Hearing more about K8’s time in Amsterdam.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Wow. What a day. So much beautiful countryside, and such a variety of experiences. Warm and cloudy, brisk and windy, brisk and rainy, sunny and misty, sunny. I really wish I could share with you beyond the photos.

  • Had some nice alone time this morning and got some journaling in at the Refuge in SJPdP before departing. I’m excited that it worked out that I started this new journal on the first day of the Camino.

  • More alone time for most of the first part of the hike. It was nice, and I got some good podcast time in. I suspect I will listen to less podcasts as time goes on. Maybe some minimalist music, mostly just the sounds of nature, as well as fellow caminantes.

  • Met some really cool people, and some less really cool but still interesting ones. I’m happy for it all.

  • Got to talk to you and hear the dulcet tones of your voice. Oh how sweet it is to get to talk to you. I absolutely love the sound of your voice. From the very first time we met, and then the first time we talked on the phone to set up details for our museum date, your voice has been a soothing sound.

  • Big and delicious meal (consisting of bread, lentil soup, and pasta with a little bit of red sauce to start, and then whole trout and French fries as my main. And also red wine, a Tempranillo from Spain (obv). Finished off with a cup of plain yogurt. Simple and filling. What more can I ask for?

  • Ate another pate/cat food sandwich midway through the walk. I think at this point I’m a fan.

  • Made some updates to “Sad Lion” later on during the walk.

  • Found a bitchin’ walking stick. May continue to take it with me. May not. We’ll see. I at least got a picture with it. For proof.

  • Showered after the walk. Mmmmm yes.

CHALLENGES

  • Didn’t sleep too well. Several snorers, including the worst of which who happened to be sleeping near my bunk. Plus, the whole room seemed to get up at like 5 or 5:30 and it was just constant noise.

  • Was frustrated at how messy other caminantes left the Refuge, especially since it was a volunteer-run place. I helped clean up some of the unnecessary mess before I left.

  • Had some tightness that popped up in my left knee about 2/3 of the way through today’s walk, as well as some blisters. Those will be an interesting challenge moving forward. Will be making it an extra point to stretch early and often.

  • Peter, the British guy, was a bit challenging, though more entertaining (at this point). He will get more challenging if I can’t successfully shake him.

SOME THINGS I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO TOMORROW

  • A supposedly easier day on the trail.

  • K8’s arrival in Europe and the subtle shift in energy her physical proximity will bring with it. She’s always near (and dear) metaphysically, of course, and that energy is consistently powerful.

PLACES VISITED
San Sebastián-Donostia > Hendaye > Bayonne > Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Another good night’s sleep, more weird dreams (that I wrote down!) that I’ll share with you at some point. Planning on continuing to keep a journal of them.

  • Said goodbye to Emma and parted ways with well wishes on both our journeys from here on out.

  • Smooth train rides across the board. Had a nice amount of time between each to do some minor exploring around the train stations.

  • Got a croissant chocolative in Hendaye.

  • Successfully pulled money out of a French ATM!

  • Worked a little more on “Sad Lion.”

  • SJPdP is beautiful. Walked around and got acclimated.

  • Found a bed in a hostel for 10€.

  • Sampled some cheese, pate, and foie gras at a local shop. Ended up with a pate sandwich (aka cat food sandwich). It was delicious.

  • Walked around SJPdP some more.

  • Got a few glasses of cidre basque.

  • Went to a mass in French and received a blessing at the end along with the rest of the caminantes in attendance. I understood very, very little, but the church was old and pretty. Plus, the old (I mean OLD) French women were adorable.

  • Started uploading pics from my trip. Decided to do them as IG stories and organize them as Highlights. The location tagging stopped working midway through the San Sebastián pics, so I’ll have to add to it later.

  • I’m excited for your departure. We’ll be in similar (if not the same) time zones in less than 2 days! That will be weird, but really cool.

CHALLENGES

  • I was stressed about the ATM/money situation. Very relieved that was resolved.

  • I haven’t made any connections yet with any of the other caminantes. Not too worried about it though. I’m feeling quite quiet and reserved today, and nobody has seemed too compelling.

  • I’m struggling with the languages. Particularly my own. I think once I got to France, I entered into “this is foreign land” mode, and for some reason, that has made it very difficult for me to initiate conversations using English. I have been tending to use Spanish, but then realize that’s not really helpful either. It’s been comical.

  • I’m in the shared kitchen/lounge area right now, and some Spaniards just came in making so much noise. The dormitory is the next room over and lots of people are trying to sleep, and it is quite frustrating. Their ringers are on super loud and their phones keep going off. Oof.

SOME THINGS I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO TOMORROW

  • Walking through the Pyrenees. This will be one of the tougher legs of the Camino elevation-wise, but it will likely be incredibly beautiful as a trade off. I’m looking forward to finally seeing what it will be like and how my body reacts.

  • Hopefully we can touch base once I find a place in Roncesvalles before you make your way to the airport. And if Lauren is with you, I’m excited for a potential over-the-phone meeting!

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Great night's sleep. I don't think I moved much at all. Maybe alternating stretching my legs. Other than that, flat on my back, and HEAVY. So nice.

  • Shower. So fresh, so clean cleeeeean.

  • Explored San Sebastián by foot with Emma, which was a lot of fun. She's from Norway (confirmed), and quit her digital marketing job back in October and has been traveling around Spain for most of the time since then. She was telling me that a group of friends of hers (all former volunteers at an organization called "The Future In Our Hands" (I think)) has been planning to try and buy a big house on a large property somewhere outside Oslo with the intent to convert the house into a shared cultural center of sorts, and they'd build their own houses on the property. Sounds so cool, and not too far from things I've thought about. Unlike my scheming, they've actually had meetings about it, and at the most recent meeting they all apparently committed to putting the money into it. So awesome, I’m very excited to hear how this progresses. Maybe one day, we’ll be able to go visit.

  • We walked a lot (sans backpacks) and stopped for pintxos/pinchos (the northern Spain version of "tapas") and later, ice cream.

  • Pet a sad, distressed pup tied to a stair rail, which seemed to calm him down.

  • Checked out a library, where there was a display of photos of refugees. Found out Emma had done some volunteer work with refugees in Greece after she graduated college.

  • San Sebastián is simply beautiful, and I spent so much time thinking about coming back with you and reflecting on how much I look forward to traveling, meeting new people, and exploring together.

  • Got to cash in on our complimentary hostel beer (which we missed last night because we both got in past the point the bar was closed) when we got back from our walk, which was SOOOOO refreshing.

  • Decided to stay another night after realizing the train options were so limited starting mid-afternoon, and got my same room and same bed. Top bunk again! Also, another complimentary beer!

  • Got a little bit of work done, which essentially paid for the extra night.

  • Managed to find some quick bites at a nearby bar/restaurant right before they closed. Also split a Kinder Bueno candy bar on the walk back to the hostel because Emma was flabbergasted I had never had one. It was good.

  • Talked to K8 and got to hear about her day, her dad’s Easter plans, her packing, and her new supervisor’s expression of appreciation for her and the rest of her crew.

  • Oh, and a few signature Kate laughs as well. Love, love, love.

CHALLENGES

  • Honestly, today has been pretty challenge-free. The walking ended up being much less than it felt like it was (8 miles), so it made me wonder how the Camino itself is going to end up being (typically will be 10-15 miles a day, with a few potentially reaching 20 miles). That was also without my pack. It's going to be good.

  • Another thing that I thought might be a challenge ended up not being one. In the past, I've worried a lot about the intra-relationship optics when I've made connections with other females. It would nearly cripple me and make being present a lot more difficult, if not impossible. So, in this case, I was nervous about how that would play out for me (if projected worries on my new partner’s behalf would affect my willingness to engage and be present in new situations). I'm happy to report that it has been a really great and eye-opening experience. I feel like I made a really cool connection, and didn't have to compromise any of myself, my needs, and my wants in order to do it. On top of that, I feel deep down and trust that my partner is genuinely excited for me for this trip and all the connections that will come from it. I also trust that she trusts me, and that is maybe the biggest difference I've so far experienced with her (and is something I will continue to be grateful for as it continues to unfold). I still have a lot to process about it all, and I will definitely share as I do.

    • TL;DR I felt normal meeting, spending time with, and making friends with a female girl, which is something I haven't experienced while in a relationship in a long time.

SOME THINGS I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO TOMORROW

  • Taking the train to France (Hendaye, my first non-Spain destination!), and then another train to another place in France (Bayonne), and then ANOTHER train to ANOTHER place in France (Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, from where I will start the Camino on Thursday). I jokingly told a coffee shop coworker that I was going to France for the first time and then almost immediately and very literally turning right back around and walking away. Hehehe.

  • Hoping to have some time to journal a bit.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Stovetop coffee at Steph’s.

  • Got to talk to you on your way to work. Despite being distracted and stressed and not being at my most engaged, I appreciated having you on the line, and very much appreciated your understanding. I love hearing you talk and it meant a lot to me to be able to participate more as a listener than a contributor this time.

  • Post-call texts with you had me full of jahhhful tears.

  • Got a SIM card from Steph for while I’m traveling. Super grateful for her for that.

  • Beautiful, QUIET bus ride from Madrid to San Sebastián. Listened to a baseball podcast, worked on some music ideas, and started transcribing some journal entries to share with you.

  • Had a nice walk from the bus station to the hostel, and am excited to see this city more during the daytime.

  • Hostel seems nice so far. Probably going to shower in the morning. Most people were sleeping already, but I did meet a girl named Emma from Santander and/or Norway (I didn’t fully understand which place she said she’s from). She was super sweet and asked if I was doing the Camino. She told me she was planning on walking it but twisted her ankle pretty badly recently and the swelling hadn’t gone down enough yet, so she wasn’t going to be able to do it this time.

  • Talked to my parents for a bit. It was nice to touch base with them.

  • Talked to you again! And yet again, so thankful for it.

  • Top bunk!

CHALLENGES

  • Was cutting it kind of close getting to the bus, mainly because the station wasn’t super clearly laid out. But I got to the bus with 5-10 minutes to spare.

  • I sat on a couch in the lobby\cafe while I was on the phone tonight, and now I’m wishing I had sat on a metal chair elsewhere. I’m sure I’m fine, but now I’m worrying about bed bugs. The hostel itself, including beds and sheets, are all very clean, so I’m not overly concerned, but I shouldn’t have sat on the couch. Now I’m feeling phantom itchiness. Writing this from bed; going to shower in the morning.

SOME THINGS I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO TOMORROW

  • Showering.

  • Desayuno.

  • Also, I apparently get a free beer from the hostel(!).

  • Exploring more of San Sebastián, including the beach and Old Town.

  • Figuring out what I want to do/when I want to head up to France to get started on the walk.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Stovetop coffee and wafer cookies at Steph’s.

  • Brief but sweet pre-yoga chat with you

  • Met up with a few of Steph’s friends (3 out of 4 from Indianapolis) at Parque del Oeste. Pretty low traffic, nice shaded areas near a creek.

  • More park lounging while they all talked about stuff that didn’t pertain to me at all (tv shows I’ve never seen mainly). I would like to do more grass lounging, in general.

  • Got more comfortable after dedicating some time to research lodging along the Camino. I even was able to multitask and do the research while at a terrace bar (with wifi) sharing a few pitchers of sangria with a few of of Steph’s friends.

  • After the terrace, we went to a bar called Vía Láctea (Milky Way), which I learned has a pretty cool history and played a prominent role as a hub in the post-Franco movement within Madrid.

  • Had some more engaging conversations about politics (sort of, more big picture political strategy), which was entertaining and energizing.

CHALLENGES

  • Roco is DEFINITELY annoying. Not a high enough cute-to-annoying ratio.

  • More concerned about the coming travels now than I was before, but I’m pretty calm about it. It’ll be fine, I’m sure. It always is. (Wrote this before the terrace research.)

  • After the terrace, one of Steph’s friends Christine started spewing nonsense and airing out some deeply repressed frustrations, but in a loud, obnoxious, and drunken way. It was uncomfortable and irritating, and is what prompted my reaching out to you later last night. I hope my appreciation and affection for you came through despite the circumstances of being frustrated and tired.

  • One of the other friends involved, Danielle, has been fairly frustrating as well, with lots of general complaining without any acceptance of solutions. She wouldn’t stop trying to pull me away from doing my trip research, despite the fact that I was still very much engaged in the conversation. (Even as I’m trying to finish writing this email this morning, she woke up and immediately came and sat down right next to me on the couch I slept on and wouldn’t stop talking to me despite my attention clearly being devoted to what I was already doing.)

  • Danielle and Christine both seem incredibly self-centered without much self-awareness, which is curious because Steph isn’t like that. It has been a real challenge.

SOME THINGS I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO TOMORROW

  • Getting out of Madrid, away from the city for a while, away from these dramatic people, away from the noise.

  • Seeing parts of the countryside of Spain I haven’t seen before on the bus ride north.

  • Talking to K8 (at the time of this email, that has already happened!).

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Made coffee this morning (and put a spoonful of chocolate ice cream in it!).

  • Watched another episode of Our Strange Rock with Taylor. It was a lot cheesier (somehow) than the rest I’ve seen so far.

  • Shaved and showered.

  • Went to Matadero Park (a former slaughterhouse that has been converted into a recreational center with bars, art galleries, movie theatres, etc.) for a picnic, some casual strolling/lounging, Polaroid picture posing, tin foil ball tossing, helado, and some fun conversation about language.

  • You looked so insanely beautiful in the picture you sent of your perdy hair. It’s now my picture for your contact in my phone.

  • Talked to you on the phone again this evening and got to hear about how your day up to that point had been. I’m really excited to hear more about Porchfest and your Peace Corps party!

  • Had another fairly intense (but fun!) conversation with Taylor and Paula about language which lead to discussing trans/identity issues (unexpected but still engaging and therefore enjoyable; it was also an enjoyable challenge to have these conversations with a non-native English speaker).

  • Met up with Steph and ate a Pad Thai-esque meal (she had to wing it based on ingredients available) that was delicious.

  • Came up with a beat on the metro over to Steph’s that I think will be pretty cool.

  • Also on the metro to her place, I listened to a new album from a drummer/composer I really like named Mark Guiliana. (Embedded below)

  • Walked around the neighborhood (Malasaña) with Roco, who is cute but such a loud and obnoxious piece of crud more often than not (sorry Steph!). Got a free glass of wine at a terrace bar she frequents. All the staff knew and loved Roco and kept giving him potato chips.

CHALLENGES

  • Roco is fairly annoying after a certain amount of (loud!) barking and attention-whoring. Especially when we were giving him sooooo much attention.

  • Taylor has been overly quick to apologize for things that make him feel like he’s being a bad host, so that’s been a compounding challenge over the last few days.

SOME THINGS I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO TOMORROW

  • Another fairly low-key day with a trip to another park.

  • Ironing out more details for my northern departure, likely on Monday morning.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Slept in, got much needed rest after a long day and late night.

  • Had a weird dream where I got drunk and blacked out and woke up with sore legs from some ill-advised and unexplained Simpsons tattoos.

  • Hung out on the sun-filled mini-balcony with Taylor and drank iced coffee and ate a bowl of delicious chocolate chocolate chip ice cream (for breakfast) while waiting on his homemade pizza to finish.

  • Did my first test run of hand-washing socks and underwear, which I’ll be doing regularly during the Camino. Looking forward to the challenge of making such an unremarkable task part of my daily ritual.

  • Walked around the neighborhood a bit and bought a pack of razors.

  • Met up with Stephanie at a place called Tupper Ware, which was a cool, kooky bar with a pretty wacky interior (see pic below).

  • Her coworkers and students were nice and cool, though there were so many of them I only really remember a few (Fernando, a 19 year old student from Nicaragua and Málaga, Spain; and Josh, a Brit expat who is an avid hip hop fan, among other things).

  • Met a few of her other friends, Johnny (an older British eccentric jack-of-all-trades who seems pretty cool and relatable) and Danielle (one of Steph’s friends from Indiana), as well as Steph’s dog Rocco (I’ll have a picture to share soon enough).

  • Talked with K8 on the phone several times, including a surprise chat during her afternoon coffee venture.

  • Heard from Jessica and Conner about driving their dog, Bisou, to North Carolina in mid-June, and it seems like their target date range will line up with my availability.

  • Hank, one of my newer friends in NYC (who is from Indiana and went to IU) recently finished the first draft of a novel, and he finally sent me a copy of it for me to check out.

CHALLENGES

  • Very tired start to the day, but the sleep was good, and I didn’t end up being hungover in any real way.

  • I haven’t been able to call my bank over WiFi yet, but I will probably get a message reply from them soon.

SOME THINGS I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO TOMORROW

  • I think I’ll be going on a picnic with Taylor and Paula, and depending on their travel plans, I may meet back up with Steph/crash at her place.

  • Looking forward to all of that, plus hearing from K8 about all of her goings on this weekend.

    • Solid music selection (Radiohead, Pink Floyd (meh), Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa)

    • Wrote a lot more than anticipated. I will definitely be sharing more of those ideas. All good, and all reflective.

    • Got some loose itinerary stuff sorted for Jordan’s trip.

  • Walked to the Prado Museum but couldn’t get in with Taylor’s teacher credential. May try and go back during the time they have free admission. We’ll see.

  • Walked to the Real Jardín Botánico and got in for free with Taylor’s credential.

  • Went to the Museo de la Reina Sofia and got in for free with his teacher card. Saw lots of Picasso, Dalí, Miró, and more. It took probably 3.5 hours and was great.

  • Beautiful weather again in Madrid (mid-50s, partly cloudy)

  • Speaking Spanish!

  • Went to a local brewery and had a few beers with Taylor

  • Met up with some of Taylor’s coworkers after beers and had a good time. One of his coworker’s girlfriends, Judit, has done the Camino 4-5 times in the last 5-6 years and was super helpful to chat with.

  • Churros!

  • Chatted with K8 in the afternoon (her morning).

  • Taylor took us to his favorite bar, which was a bit out of the way, only to find out that he apparently got kicked out his last time there and wasn’t allowed in. He was very sorry, but his coworker Anthony (sassy gay black guy from Philly—a ton of fun) and I found it hysterical.

  • I had my first tortilla española of the trip, and it was delicious!

CHALLENGES

  • Was out later than anticipated and probably drank more than I planned to.

  • Speaking Spanish!

SOME THINGS I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO TOMORROW

  • Having a little bit of a rest day and getting things more put together for the Camino.

  • I also have plenty of pics from my day that I intend to share one way or another.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Flight

    • Cozy seats (w/ head flaps!)

    • Had the whole row to myself

    • Touch screen w/ movies/shows/games, and USB port

    • Was able to sleep relatively easily

    • Flight crew's uniforms

  • Talked to K8 on her way to work

  • Beautiful weather in Madrid (mid-50s, partly cloudy)

  • Clean and smooth Metro system

    • I mostly took stairs in place of the congested escalators

      • My legs!

  • Speaking Spanish!

  • Found a cute little cafe (called Epopolo) in the Tribunal neighborhood for an afternoon snack and some WiFi (pronounced "WEE-fee."). The person behind the counter was an older lady, super sweet and patient with me and my bumbling Spanish. There was a gentleman there the whole time who sometimes went behind the bar—I suspect he was her husband. And they had classical music on the whole time. What I got:

    • Cafe con leche (part of why I started drinking cortados stateside, though I expect I'll be trying cortados here soon to compare now that I'm a bit more initiated)

    • A slice of carrot bread (think banana/zucchini bread style)

    • A beer (which came with some complimentary potato chips)

    • She later brought out some kind of cured sliced meat. It was a lot more like pepperoni than anything else.

  • WhatsApp FINALLY loaded and I got my first WhatsApp message from K8. So sweet and touching.

  • Got some work done while waiting on my friend Taylor to finish work and his physical therapy (he broke his wrist fairly recently)

  • Made it to Taylor and Paula’s apartment and had good chats, a few beers, and some roasted veggies (zucchini, bell peppers, asparagus, and mushrooms)

  • Talked to K8 on her way home from work! Laughed super hard at her goofiness.

CHALLENGES

  • Flight delay, was very tired

  • Some medium to heavy turbulence fairly early on, made it hard to sleep

  • Speaking Spanish!

  • Realized that exchanging USD over here is going to be really inefficient, and I have ~$200 in cash on me. I'm torn between exchanging it and just holding onto it and pulling from an ATM.

  • Missing K8

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Wydown: delicious cortado / inspiring (as usual) conversation with K8 / guy wearing Greenville Astros hat(!)

  • Wrote and delivered a letter

  • Touched base with friends in Madrid, feeling like my itinerary for the Camino is starting to solidify (stay tuned)

  • Met up with a handful of good friends in NYC before making my way to the airport

  • Talked to Sleepy K8 on the way to the airport

CHALLENGES

  • Lots of emotions departing

  • Feeling utterly tongue-tied as K8 & I said our goodbyes at Union Station.

  • Bus WiFi definitely did not work, but I was able to use my phone as a hotspot for work communications

  • Flight delayed, not a huge deal; allowed me to charge my phone and rest a bit

There’s not much I have to say that I haven’t already said. I hope you don’t mind the repetition. I promise to keep finding new melodies and words and rhyme schemes to keep it fresh. But the story is there, and the story is solid, and I am so excited to keep living out this story and sharing it with you.
